Marktgemeinde Gurk

Gurk (Slovenian Krka) is a market town of Carinthia in the district of Sankt Veit an der Glan. The town had supraregional importance as the bishop's seat of the Gurk diocese and through the Romanesque Gurk Cathedral of 1140, which dates back to a foundation of the sovereign Hemma of Gurk (995-1045). The market town of Gurk is surrounded by mountain meadows and extensive high forests and represents a center of the sparsely populated Gurk valley.
